Alberta is experiencing another destructive wildfire season, with the communities of Fox Lake, Chipewyan Lake, Garden River, John D'Or Prairie and the municipal district of Bighorn have been ordered to evacuate. As Albertans are left reeling from the reports of homes, historical structures and businesses having been lost to the fast-moving wildfires in the Jasper National Park – please know you have the full weight of the Alberta RCMP's support during these exceptionally traumatic times.

Alberta's government is requesting assistance from the Government of Canada to ensure all resources are brought to bear on this situation. The Municipal District of Bighorn has issued an evacuation order for a part of the municipal district. Evacuations for Jasper and Jasper National Park are ongoing, and evacuees are being supported at reception centres in Calgary, Grande Prairie and Edmonton.

The Town of Jasper and Jasper National Park have issued an evacuation order for all residents and park visitors. Evacuees should go to Grande Prairie, Calgary or Edmonton where reception centres are available to provide support. The town has also declared a state of local emergency.

Five communities remain evacuated as the province continues to respond to extreme wildfire conditions. A potential shift in winds is expected across northern Alberta on Tuesday that could change the direction and activity of existing fires.

The RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), Northwest Region has arrested and charged two individuals for uttering threats against several public figures in two separate investigations. ­ On May 10, 2024, INSET received information that a user of the social media platform "X", formerly known as Twitter, had allegedly posted threats to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. On June 6, 2024, Mason John Baker, 23, a resident of Calgary, was charged with uttering threats against a person contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Little Red River Cree Nation has expanded their evacuation alert to include the communities of John D'Or and Fox Lake. Fox Lake and John D'or Prairie are on mandatory evacuation effective July 20, 12:30 p.m. The fire danger is very high to extreme across most of the province due to hot, dry and windy conditions.

The Municipal District of Opportunity has declared a state of local emergency and issued an evacuation order for residents of Chipewyan Lake. About 89 residents have now evacuated. Extreme heat will continue to drive significant wildfire activity in the coming days.
