Cold Lake — Alberta RCMP officer involved in shooting in Cold Lake

On Dec. 14, 2024, at approximately 8 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP responded to a 911 call of an attempted stabbing at a transit stop on 50 Street at 43 Avenue, in Cold Lake. Two officers arrived and located the male subject armed with an edged weapon. Officers used their intervention options, including a firearm, to bring the subject into custody. The subject was transported to the local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. No officers or other civilians were injured during this incident.

Wetaskiwin — Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit Investigate fatal arson in Wetaskiwin

On Dec. 15, 2024, at 5:12 a.m., Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of a residential house fire near 53 Avenue and 45 Street in Wetaskiwin. Wetaskiwin and Millet Fire Departments arrived and put out the blaze. Once in the home, investigators located a deceased male. An autopsy will be completed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, in order to determine the cause of death and confirm identity. Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit was notified and has taken carriage of the investigation.

Officers attended, and while ensuring that everyone was safe in the residence, an altercation ensued, and an officer was attacked. As a result, the officer discharged their service weapon. The suspect suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. One officer received minor injuries as a result of the altercation.
